There are basically five major styles in Chinese calligraphy - Zuan, Li, Tsao, Hsin, and Kai. Each style has gone through changes and evolutions throughout Chinese history in terms of their character form and artistic structures. (Chinese characters are not symbols, alphabets, or letters. They are composed of strokes, section headings, and radicals.) At first, each style was created for writing rather than for art. Chinese calligraphy masters and practitioners in each dynasty enriched the styles and structures of the characters with their insight, emotion, and artistic creativity. In practical terms there are literally thousands of styles of Chinese calligraphy in addition to the individual interpretation of each style. The continuity of Chinese culture and civilization is indebted to the preservation of forms of various scripts throughout the ages. Classic Style - the most exacting style requiring perfect proportion in every brush stroke. This style is most widely used in formal writings such as certificates and literature. Cursive Style - the most artistic style filled with flowing brush strokes that are in harmony with nature. This style is used mainly in artwork such as poetry. Semi Cursive - this style is a compromise between the Classic Style and Cursive Style. While rambling together on wonderful nature walks, he would identify the birds and plants, and I would show him where to find hidden fairy gardens. We delighted in seeing into each other?s worlds, and both views continue to intrigue me. I majored in biology in college, but soon realized that art was essential to me, and that it would be my path and lifelong pursuit. Art has been important to me for as long as I can remember. The inner world of dreams, imagination and creativity were my blissful refuge, helping me through the challenges of childhood. I drew pictures of objects to illustrate the alphabet as I learned it, and at age 8, I filled a journal with intricate mandalas. Of course I had no idea there was a name for these detailed drawings ? I just loved making them. Many of my toys were little things I made of stones, clay, or paper. Creating them was much more fun and rewarding than playing with them afterwards. I have no idea how my family dealt with the never-ending accumulation of handmade gifts I constantly bestowed on them at each and every holiday! One summer in high school, I wandered into a San Francisco needlepoint store. The beautiful hand-painted canvases covering the walls amazed me. Archeologists have discovered art work comparable to American scrimshaw that dates back to at least 100?200 AD in North America; long before the sailors of the 1800's actually created and gave name to the art form. Scrimshaw is the oldest of the very few art forms that are native to North America. While other cultures around the world certainly worked in ivory and bone, the style of North American cultures and that of the Yankee sailors were uniquely their own, making scrimshaw a traditionally American art form. Today, Scrimshaw is still practiced by master scrimshanders and their work is highly sought after and collected. Perhaps the most noted collector was President John F. Kennedy, who even displayed many of his most cherished pieces of ivory scrimshaw in the Oval Office of the White House. No animals are harmed as the result of work by responsible scrimshanders. The work seen here is all done on shed antler, bone, horn, legal elephant and most often, fossil ivories that can be as much as 10,000 to 50,000 years old or older. The fossil ivory used here is from the ice age giant, the wooly mammoth, or ancient fossil mastodon or walrus tusk, making it ethically and ecologically ideal for the traditional 14th wedding anniversary gift of ivory. Horn scrimshaw is most often seen on black powder hunting horns. The rare and beautiful woods used by the artist are primarily black Makassar Ebony and equally magnificent Ironwoods from the African continent. The art seen here is accomplished by stippling the solid surface area to create an image. Stippling is the creation of thousands of tiny holes that are then carefully filled with pigment to reveal a beautiful work of art. Pirri's grasp of the female has evolved to the point that often the form of the clay itself leads to the creation of a specific sculpture. Over time, Pirri has expanded her process to include silkscreen print techniques that support the feel of timelessness. She has also experimented with colored slip applications in specific ways with the goal of developing random outcomes through the soda firing process. The element of surprise, such as one might feel if they could suddenly unearth one of her pieces from the ground, is an important aspect of Pirri's work and reminds us all that within each woman lays strength and an incalculable ability to endure. Diego Rivera was born in Guanajuato City, Guanajuato, to a well-off family. Rivera claimed to be descended, on his mother's side, from Jews who converted to Roman Catholicism, and, on his father's side, from Spanish nobility. Since he was ten years of age, Rivera studied art at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City. He was sponsored to continue study in Europe by Teodoro A. Dehesa Mendez, the governor of the State of Veracruz. After arrival in Europe in 1907, Rivera initially went to study with Eduardo Chicharro in Madrid, Spain, and from there went to Paris, France, to live and work with the great gathering of artists in Montparnasse, especially at La Ruche, where his friend Amedeo Modigliani painted his portrait in 1914. His circle of close friends, which included Ilya Ehrenburg, Chaim Soutine, Modigliani's wife Jeanne Hebuterne, Max Jacob, gallery owner Leopold Zborowski, and Moise Kisling, was captured for posterity by Marie Vorobieff-Stebelska (Marevna) in her painting "Homage to Friends from Montparnasse" What A Crazy Man (1962). In those years, Paris was witnessing the beginning of cubism in paintings by such eminent painters as Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. From 1913 to 1917, Rivera enthusiastically embraced this new school of art. Around 1917, inspired by Paul Cezanne's paintings, Rivera shifted toward Post-Impressionism with simple forms and large patches of vivid colors. His paintings began to attract attention, and he was able to display them at several exhibitions.
